AMMAR BIN YASIR

bismillah2

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

One of the companions who has several narrated merits pertaining to his faith, personality and resilience are ‘Ammar bin Yasir raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him). Ammar bin Yasir (radiyallahuan’huma) is one of the most famous Sahaba and was among the slaves freed by Abu Bakr RA. Ammar belonged to Banu Makhzum tribe and born in Makkah. His father, Yasir ibn Amir, was from the tribe of Qahtan in Yemen and migrated to Makkah and settled down there by marrying Sumayyah bint Khayyat, a slave woman; Ammar and his parents, Yasir and Sumayyah, were slaves to Abu Huzaifa, but upon his death, Abu Jahl -who became later one of Islam’s most brutal enemies, took them over as his slaves.

Abu Jahl killed his mother Sumayyah RA and she became the first martyr in the cause of Islam. There was none among the Immigrants whose mother and father had embraced Islam except for Ammar bin Yasir.

Name and Lineage:

His full name was  Ammar bin Yasir Al-Aansi Al-Muzhaji  ﻋمار ﺑﻦ ﻳﺎﴎ اﻟﻌﻨسی المذﺣﺠﻲ . His Kunya was Abu al-Yaqzan اﺑﻮ اﻟﯿﻘﻈﺎن . He embraced Islam in childhood along with his father.

 ﺳﺎﺑﻘﻮن اﻻوﻟﻮن From the Foremost

Ammar’s trust in and knowledge of Prophet ﷺ, even before his prophethood, encouraged him to follow Muhammad’s ﷺ prophetic visions as one of the earliest converts.

Narrated `Ammar bin Yasir: I saw Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) , and the only converts (to Islam) with him, were five slaves, two women and Abu Bakr.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3857)

Ammar bin Yasir’s other slave companions were Suhaib RA and Bilal RA

`Ammar, Suhaib, and Bilal were imprisoned.

One who suffered a great deal in the way of Islam:

The Makhzum clan used to take out Ammar bin Yasir with his father and mother in the heat of the day and expose them to excessively hot environment of Makkah and torture them in the scorches of the open fire, and Prophet ﷺ used to pass by them and say,

Jabir reported that once the Messenger of Allah (s) passed by Ammar and his family while they were being tortured, he said: “Rejoice o family of Ammar and family of Yasir! for you are promised paradise.”

Eventually, Ammar was tortured until he did not know what he was saying, persecution has reached its extent! The Prophet ﷺ said, “O Abu Yaqdhan, be patient!

Migration:

After much persecution, Ammar with other companions migrated to Abyssinia finding protection under a just Christian king though ibn Ishaq disputes that he was one of those companions in Abyssinia. He later migrated with other companions to Madinah making him within a select group of companions that made two migrations for the sake of Allah SWT.

And those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allah after they had been wronged – We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.

[Surah Nahl : 41]

Ammar RA participated in all battles including Badr, he first migrated to Habashah and then to Madinah.

Narrated Abu Ishaq that I heared Bara (bin `Azib): The first people who came to us (in Medina) were Mus`ab bin `Umar and Ibn Um Maktum. Then came to us `Ammar bin Yasir and Bilal.

Important achievements

Ammar RA also has the honor to participate in the battle of Badr, and Uhud. He was of one of those beloved companions who took Bay’ah Ridwan (Pledge of Ridwan) was a pledge that was sworn to the Prophet ﷺ by his Sahaba (companions) prior to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (6 AH). The pledge, sworn under a tree, was to avenge the rumored death of Uthman ibn Affan RA.

At the time of Abu Bakr’s RA caliphate, Ammar RA took part in the Battle of Yamamah to eliminate the threat of Musaylamah al-Kaddhab. He was also appointed as Ameer of Kufah in the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab RA.

The command to follow his way:

Ammar RA was blessed with best qualities that Rasoolullah ﷺ commanded us to follow his distinctive character.

The Messenger of Allahﷺ said: “Follow the two after me from my Companions, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar. And act upon the character of ‘Ammar, and hold fast to the covenant of Ibn Mas’ud.”

Good character consists of defining your values and integrity based on time-tested principles and self-reflection and having the courage to live your life accordingly. As a Muslim, we believe whatever Prophet ﷺ has suggested is for our own benefit. We Muslims ask in our daily prayers that may Allah SWT keep us on the path of those whom Allah favored, Ammar bin Yasir RA was one of those whom Allah favored.

His Great Status:

Once there was a dispute between Ammar and Khalid b. Waleed, he said something harsh to Ammar RA, so he approached Prophet ﷺ and related whole incident. Prophet ﷺ asked Khalid RA, and he admitted his guilt. He ﷺ said:

Whoever keeps enmity for Ammar, Allah will be his enemy. He who who hates Ammar then Allah will hate him. He who abuses him verbally, Allah will do the same to him.

Khalid said when I left nothing was dearer to me than to please Ammar b. Yasir. So I met him and made him happy.

Dear readers, it is worth to note that difference and disputes happen as its human nature, and much good can come from conflict and differences. But in some situations our nafs becomes arrogant and while knowing that the other party is right, one continues to dispute. Sometimes shaytan comes in. So do not delay in resolving the conflict.  If you are wrong, quickly admit it and take responsibility. Even if you’re NOT wrong, at least give them the benefit of the doubt, “I may be wrong, let’s look at the facts together.” It’s hard to argue with that!

His strength in Iman:

It was narrated from ‘Amr bin Shurahbil,: That one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Messenger of Allah [ﷺ] said: ‘Ammar’s heart overflows with Faith.'”

[Sunan an-Nasa’i 5007]

[1]  Manaawi Rahimullah said it means, Iman had mixed with his flesh blood and bones and has blended with him such that it shall never leave. And this quality can only be in the one whom Allah has protected against the shaytan.

He was upon the fitrah:

The Messenger of Allahﷺ said: Abu Al Yaqzan (Ammar bin yasir) is upon Fitra and he will not leave it until death or extreme old age.

The Prophet’s  ﷺ praise for him:

Narrated ‘Ali: that ‘Ammar bin Yasir came seeking permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ so he said: ‘Permit him, greetings to the pure one, the purified.”

When Amr b. al-As was near his death, he was in extreme worry. When his son Abdullah saw him in that condition he asked O AbuAbdullah, What is this worry? While the Prophet ﷺ kept you close to himself, and assigned you different tasks? He said, O my son, This is true however let me tell you, by Allah I do not know whether he ﷺ dealt with me in this manner out of love for me, or out of the intention to soften my heart [ta’leeful qalb]. Though I can testify that the Prophet ﷺ loved two people until he passed away, one was the son of Sumayya (i.e., Ammar) and the other was the son of Umm Abd (i.e., Abdullah b. Masud). After this he placed his hand under his chin and said, O Allah, You commanded us and we abandoned Your command! You forbade us and we continued, and nothing but Your forgiveness can cover us. He kept repeating these words until he passed away.

What a great example of humbleness!  Iman makes a person humble. He doesn’t look at his good deeds / qualities in admiration, rather he is worried about his deficiencies and faults. Ask yourself – who am I? What do I think of myself? What do I see in myself? Only good, or some faults also? Or do I not even think about myself? Too busy to analyze me critically. Always remember, good people keep themselves accountable. We say very often, ‘Im so bad!’ – but do we mean it? The Sad fact is, We don’t check our faults very often, realize our mistakes, and when don’t, we cannot correct ourselves. It is similar that if we don’t see the mess and dirt in our house, we will not clean it. So, we need to identify our faults and work on them for the improvement.

Allah says about the Sahabah, that He has beautified Iman in their hearts, or adorned their hearts with Iman. Everyone else likes to beautify their hearts, but it requires efforts and determination that Sahabah RA had.

His Character and noble Qualities

Sometimes, when faced with a choice between two options, the better of the two is obvious. These are easy situations to deal with: one simply chooses the option that will be the most beneficial (or least harmful, as the case may be). But what about situations in which the right decision is less obvious? In these circumstances making a decision can be difficult, sometimes so difficult that we are paralyzed by indecision and allow unwanted outcomes to befall us.[1] .

Ammar RA had a great inner vision and  his decisions were on correct intuition.

It was narrated that Aishah RA said: ‘The Messenger of Allah said: ”Ammar- no two things were shown to him but he chose the better of the two.”
[Sunan Ibn Majah: 148]

One who desired Allah’s approval and the home of the hereafter

Abdullah said, I do not know anyone who has survived a great tribulation and he wanted only Allah’s approval and the home of the hereafter, except for Ammar bin Yasir.

One who desired his reward from Allah alone

Ikrimah reported that Ibn Abbas told him and to his son Ali to go to Abu Saed Khudriy to listen to hadith from him. So we both went and he was in his garden and when he saw us he took his shawl and came and sat with us. He began narrating hadith to us and mentioned the construction of the Masjid. He said we would carry one brick at a time, and Ammar bin Yasir would carry two bricks at a time. The Prophet ﷺ saw him do that so he began removing dust from his head and said, O Ammar will you not carry one brick like your companions? He said I desire reward from Allah.

ُHere few things are required to reflect that Ibn Masud sent his son to sit in a gathering of hadith. This was always the way of the righteous. It is Allah’s blessing on us if we get to sit in a gathering of hadith and Quran. Secondly, When we want reward from Allah, then we will not consider our work to be a mere job.

One who remembered the instruction of the Prophet ﷺ

The Sunnah of the Prophetﷺ is a ship of salvation and a haven of safety. The Prophet ﷺ urged us to adhere to it and not neglect it. We can see in the character of Ammar RA that he was a true follower and he had the sound understanding of faith.
Abu Wa’il reported: Ammar delivered to us the sermon. It was short and eloquent. When he descended (from the pulpit) we said to him: 0 Abd al-Yaqzan, you have delivered a short and eloquent sermon. Would that you had lengthened (the sermon). He said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for there is charm (in precise) expression.
[Sahih Muslim: 869]

We should develop a habit of talking less with effective words. So that listener can focus on what is said and learns from it.

His Intelligence

Ammar b. Yasir was asked about a matter, so he asked, has this occurred? They said not yet. He said, then leave me until it happens, when it will occur we will let you know what to do.

Hypothetical questions- are typically too difficult for respondents since they require more scrutiny. Avoid asking these types of questions because Hypothetical questions generate hypothetical answers, which do not provide clear, consistent data, representing the real opinion. That’s why it is not intelligent to delve into such discussions.

His Simplicity

Abdullah b. Abi Hudhayl narrated: I saw Ammar purchasing some food with one dirham and then he carried it on his back, and at the time he was the Ameer of Kufah.

Humility is a great attribute of companions of Prophet ﷺ. We saw in the life of Ibn Umar RA as well that he built his house without any help. Similarly, Ammar RA also carried his own food.

Hence, Simplicity and Humility are the two greatest virtues of life and the key for one to be successful and be genuinely loved and respected by people of all ages, caste, creed, religion, race, generations, etc. These virtues always keep you Grounded and prevent you from being Arrogant.

One who spoke little

Ammar bin Yasir spoke little and observed silence for long

We’ve been blessed with a very precious gift of talking. The gift of being able to express our feelings, emotions, ideas or plans. But, alas, as with every gift, overusing it may lead to unexpected results. Important is do not speak of that which does not concern you, and guard your tongue like you guard your money. When you speak less, you do more. It’s obvious. Your focus switches from talking to doing.

His death

He received the good news of martyrdom from the Prophet ﷺ and died in the battle of Siffeen.

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضی اللہ عنہ that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه) said: O Ammar! Glad tidings, a group of rebels would kill you.

Narrated from Abu Sa ‘eed al-Khudri, in the report about the building of the mosque (in Madinah), that he said: We would carry one brick at a time, but  ‘Ammaar would carry two bricks at a time. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw him and brushed the dust from him, saying: “Woe to ‘Ammaar; he will be killed by the transgressing group; he will be calling them to Paradise and they will be calling him to Hell”. ‘Ammaar said: I seek refuge with Allah from tribulation.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari :447]

[2] What is meant by calling to Paradise in this hadith is calling to the means of attaining it, which is obedience to the caliph (Ameer al-Mu’mineen), and what is meant by calling to Hell is calling to that which leads to it, which is opposing the caliph and rebelling against him. But whoever did that on the basis of ijtihad and valid interpretation is excused.

Ibn Battaal (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

The words “he will be calling them to Paradise and they will be calling him to Hell” can only be correctly applied to the Khawaarij to whom ‘Ali RA sent ‘Ammaar to call them to join the jamaa‘ah (main body of the Muslims); they cannot be correctly applied to any of the Sahaabah, because it is not possible for any of the Muslims to interpret any of their actions except in the best manner, because they were the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whom Allah praised and testified to their virtue, and said (interpretation of the meaning): You  are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind”. [Aal ‘Imraan 3:110].

He passed away in Siffeen battle, at the age of 91 or 93. Ali RA carried him on his chest and prayed for him with the Muslims, and buried him in the clothes he was wearing.

What is required is to think positively of those whom Allah chose to accompany His Prophet ﷺ: for they are the best companions of the best Prophet, and it is not permissible to say anything of them but the highest words of praise; if anyone criticises them, then this gives rise to suspicion about the sincerity of his religious commitment.

Note: For ease of reading, we have not inserted “May Allah be pleased with him (R.A)” each time with; Ammar Ibn Yasir R.A name or the name of each Companion is mentioned, but please take it that the salutations apply to all of them, may Allah be pleased with them all.
