Juz 23 – Points to Ponder (English)

Surah Yaseen

—————-

[36: 1-4] The only thing that we need to pursue in this world is the straight path that will lead us to the fulfillment of our desires, in the hereafter. But only praying for guidance is not enough; we need to have a role model to follow in whom we can trust. Therefore Allah sent Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) as a perfect example for us to follow until the end of time. The Quran is the guide book and the life and personality of the Prophet (s.a.w) is the practical application of this guidance.

[36: 5] The Quran was not meant just to be placed on high shelves, rather it should have been given the highest place on our priority list. Holding it above the bride and bridegroom was never taught to us; it is our self created innovation for which we should seek forgiveness of Allah. But its spiritual protection should certainly be held above us as a refuge from shaitan and as a guide for our entire lifetime.

[36: 7-10] Allah says that most people won’t accept the truth no matter what signs are sent down for them…but why? Hasn’t Allah provided them with the resources to acquire knowledge and guidance? The fact is that the truth is obvious as the bright sun but they have their eyes closed to it. Don’t think that the power you have in this world is going to remain with you forever. Work for Hereafter or else the glamour of this worldly life is like a wall in front of them which will make you totally forgetful of the Akhirah.

[37: 11] Instill the fear of Allah inside of yourself. Its the fear of being watched by Allah all the time that pushes the believer to cleanse and purify himself from all evils. A believer who fears Ar Rahman when he is alone is the one who will take heed of the reminders and messages. Allah has prepared forgiveness for him and a great reward.

[36:12] Know that all your deeds are being written and Allah knows everything. The register is being made ready. On the Day Of Qiyamah, you will see what you sent forth of good deeds and you will know what you left behind i.e.,
1-good deeds that keep continuing even after you die (of sadqa jariya).
2-Or the good deeds that you could have done but did not actually do. So you will full of regret and sadness because of it.

[37: 17] Your responsibility is only to advise the one who is involved in anything evil, guidance is in the hands of Allah, if there is any goodness inside of a person, Allah will guide him to the truth. Your job is to just remind, remind and leave the rest to Allah.

[36:20] Read the ayaat. Allah tells us about a man who accepted eeman even when the whole community was against him. Allah loves this act so when the people killed him Allah took him as a martyr straight to Jannah.
When Allah loves someone He gives him eeman…and understanding of deen. And then he gets sweetness of eeman…which makes him deal with the toughest of situations with ease.

[37: 22] Since Allah had created you and has all the power then why should you worship anything else? Accept the helplessness before Allah!

[36:26] This man also has worried for his people…It is the quality of his eeman that he wants to let his people know the result of his belief so that they may do the same as he did; believe and follow the Messengers and reach Jannah.
What is our attitude when we see someone heading towards self destruction? We think well he deserves punishment and Oh thank God, I am such a pious person, Alhamdulillah.. Do we feel any pain of his disbelief? If not, then what kind of faith is this?

[37: 32] Not only disbelievers, Muslims have become so detached from the Quran that their faith in the hereafter has also become blurred. Contemplate on the signs which He has placed for us in this world so that we might realize that it is not difficult for Allah to give life to the dead.

[37: 36] Everything in this world is created in pairs, whether its the man, trees or any other creation. Nothing exists alone, except Allah, the Almighty who has no partners.

[37: 38- 39] It’s from the beauty of Allah creation and prove to His oneness that Sun and Moon are following their appointed course, had there been more than One God, the world wouldn’t have been so organized.

[37: 43] In the middle of that endless expanse of water who can save you from drowning except Allah. Don’t be ungrateful to Allah’s great blessings and acknowledge the greatness of your Creator.

[37: 33- 44] When you see and think about the amazing beauty of Allah’s creation, then it should make you feel aware of Allah’s love and mercy. The heart should become soft and be filled up with awe and admiration for this Supreme Creator who made such fabulous things for you.

[37: 46] Arrogance eventually leads to disbelief in the Hereafter. Beware of it!

[37: 47] Spend your money om charity. Don’t be like those who say Allah is Caretaker of poor and He could feed them, He is rather testing you with your wealth and them with their poverty, so be grateful and spend for His sake.

[37: 48] The fact is that the day of Judgement will come on its appointed time whether we believe in it or not, whether we fear it and prepare accordingly or prefer to close our eyes to it.

[37: 51- talks about second blowing of suur (trumpet).
Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, “How can I feel at ease when the Angel of the Trumpet, (Israfil) has put his lips to the Trumpet and is waiting for the order to blow it”. He (the Prophet) perceived as if this had shocked his Companions, so he told them to seek comfort through reciting: ‘Hasbunallah wa ni’mal-Wakeel [Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)]“.

[37: 55- 58] The hardships you might face in this world in order to remain true to Allah, are nothing when you view it from the perspective of the Hereafter. What are a few years of sacrifice as compared to the eternal bliss of Paradise? Be patient so you could be in eternal bliss in the Hereafter!

[37: 65] Today it might seem impossible that our hands and feet could be speaking against us. But if you think about it, if Allah could teach our tongues to speak, then how can He not put the same capability in our limbs? After all, He is the one who created us, but the sad truth is that we have forgotten the Creator.

[37: 81] We really need to focus our hearts and minds on the presence and power of Allah who is the Creator, Owner and the Provider of all things. Nothing is difficult for Him to accomplish. If we are living here in spite of disobeying Him, it’s just Allah’s Mercy and Compassion that He has given us a life span, and a chance for us to turn to Him in repentance.

[37: 82] It was so easy for Allah to make this universe and it is equally easy for Him to destroy it all in the blink of an eye or even sooner than that. So hasten to good deeds so you that you would be save from the terrors of that Day!

—————————————–
Surah As Saffaat
—————————————–

*[37:1] Pray in congregation in the Masjid, brothers. Straighten your rows during prayer as it is the characteristic of the angels. Prophet Muhammad (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam) used to straighten his companions’ rows in prayer himself!

*[37:22] Know who your friends are, whom do you love and like to be with. As on the Day of Judgement, a man will be gathered with the ones he loved and liked to be with.

*[37:40-49] Strive for the love of Allah. The special and sincere servants of Allah will be rewarded with Jannah full of gifts and blessings.

*[37:51] Know that you will have someone in your family or in your group of associates who will discourage you when you race to obey the commands of Allah. Never let him stop you. Stay strong and continue in good deeds.

*[37:57-61] Being saved from punishment on the Day of Judgement is real success so strive for this success, race and compete in doing good deeds.

*[37:62] Ask Allah to protect you from the Hell Fire and ask Him to not include you from the ones whose food will be Zaqqum – A tree from the depths of hell having the most bitter taste.

*[37:99] The one who loves to be with Allah has eeman and loves Allah wishes to be alone – to gain knowledge do dhikr. All this can’t be possible with people around.

*[37:100] When Prophet Ibrahim (a.s) turned away from his people because of their persistent disbelief. Then when he was alone he prayed for a child…and Allah blessed him. But it was not like his prayer was responded to immediately. Ibrahim (a.s) prayed and prayed and years later he got blessed with a son. Allah wants you to keep calling and begging Him so that you are always in a state of worship and draw close to him through it.

*[37:101] He blessed him with a *haleeem* son…who is patient never arrogant and disobedient or complaining unlike usual children

*[37:102] Prophet Ibrahim’s tests didn’t end when he was blessed with a son. Allah sent him a dream ordering him to sacrifice his son…the son who was born after years n years of dua..so Ibrahim (a.s) called him and asked him about it. Ismail (a.s) being a true-believing servant of Allah too submits to the command of Allah. Both passed the clear test and were included among Allah’s blessed muhsin servants.
So Allah shows us that Allah will surely “give” the one who sacrifices for Allah’s sake.
Happily-ever-after is only in Jannah whereas this world is all about tests, trials and our response to them.

*[37:139-148] About Prophet Yunus (as), Allah mentions how he ran away from the people that he was sent to. He ran away and boarded a ship in flight, only to be swallowed by a whale. Then remarkably, Allah `azza wa jall draws our attention to one particular trait of his which became the cause of his salvation: he was somebody who did a lot of tasbeeh and dhikr (remembrance of God). Sometimes in life, you can get so caught up with things and feel so surrounded or feel hopeless, and you search for every solution, but you don’t realise that perhaps, your salvation lies within some words of remembrance. If you are in the heart (or ‘belly’) of turmoil and trouble, take time to do tasbeeh, take time to make istighfar (forgiveness), take time to remember Allah, and take time to be grateful because wallahi these are known causes for salvation. These words you utter are armies of Allah, and they are keys from Allah, which can open every locked door.
Aim to become a ‘musabbih’ in the Sight of Allah; written down by the Angels as someone whose words are golden because they are filled with tasbeeh, istighfar, and shukr (gratitude) etc. As the pious before us used to say: you will then become known by the people of the heavens and hidden amongst the people of the earth; and that’s a great rank indeed.
Hadith: “Glad-tidings for he whose scrolls are found filled with istighfar (seeking forgiveness).” [Ibn Majah, al-Nasa’i]
May Allah help us to remember Him much and may our tongues be moistened with words of remembrance; words of great heights in the Hereafter, ameen. (Fajr Blog)

*In these special days and nights, Recite the du’a of Yunus often:
لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

The Prophet (SallAllahu Alyhi wasallam) said: “The prayer of Dhu’l-Noon when he was in the belly of the fish:

‘Laa ilaaha illa Anta, subhaanaka inni kuntu min al-zaalimeen (There is no god but You, glory to You, verily I was one of the wrongdoers).’

A Muslim never calls upon his Lord with these words concerning any matter, but his prayer is answered.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3505; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1644)

*[37:74-149] Prophets Nuh, Ibrahim, Ishaq, Ismail, Musa, Haroon, Ilyas, Lut, Yunus -alayhimussalam- were special, chosen and believing servants of Allah so Allah honored them and preserved their remembrance till the end of time. Surah al-Saffat is similar in some ways to Surah al-Anbiya’ (and also al-Shu’ara) in the sense that they both go through the chronicles of the Prophets. However, where al-Anbiya’ spoke of their trials, al-Saffat speaks more of their strength in calling to the Way of Allah and their piety.

—————————————–
Surah Saad
—————————————–

*[38:9] We find ourselves in the most blessed of seasons. Ask Allah frequently for everything you need even if it’s as tiny as a shoelace for your shoe. Ask Allah, He is Al Wahhab – the Bestower. All treasures and depositories of Mercy and blessings belong to Him alone.

* Allah Ta’ala specifically mentions Prophets Dawood, Sulaiman and Ayyub (‘alayhimussalam) in this surah as Awwaab as they were the ones who always used to turn to Allah in shukr and duaa.

*[38:17] When you feel sad, anxious or worried, read the stories of the prophets. It will give you peace, comfort and lots of lessons.

*[38:21-24] Your prayers don’t get answered? Sad and depressed? Then know that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not answer our prayers because He wants to see us on the prayer mat more often. Had He answered them right away, would we lower ourselves in sujood? Shed a tear? Turn to Him? Talk to Him?
Imagine a person whose company you enjoy the most. When they come you don’t want them to leave. You abandon what you are doing and are attentive to them. You rejoice when they talk and you want to hear them continue talking just to be with them. The longer this meeting lasts, the more delighted you feel.
Same goes with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, our du’as and those heartfelt talks that we make with Him in secret He loves us hence He wants to see us and hear from us more often.
There is always a blessing in disguise. What worldly blessing could be more valuable than being in the Company of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala?
Look at your du’as and trials from a different perspective and be humbled in gratitude that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala chose YOU to be with Him. Not many people are granted this Honorable Company.

38:24-Allah tests you to: to teach you, warn you and make you come closer to Him through dua, istighfar and prayer. It’s from the sunnah of the prophets to fall into sajda for shukr and istighfar. Follow them.

*[38:26] Desires/nafs leads a person away from the path of Allah and make him forget the akhirah and start sinning and then eventually fall into hell.

*[38:29] Why has the Quran been revealed? So that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.

*[38:32] Do the work that leads you towards the remembrance of Allah and His worship. Prophet Sulaiman’s power and wealth motivated him to increase in shukr and dhikr of Allah.

*[38:41-47] Learn the art of being patient and thankful to Allah by Prophet Ayyub (alayhissalam). When he was tested with sickness for 18 years, he lost his wealth and also his family but he was patient and always kept praising Allah so Allah compensated him with everything better than what he lost.

Concept of Tawheed in the light of Surah Yaseen

Existence of God and Concept of Tawheed in the Light of Surah Yaseen

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Terms like Religion, Faith, God, and personal gods are not new to anyone. It seems that there is some element shared to all human experiences that reason us to look for something supreme on which to shape our lives, to ask the question Does God exist? And to assert, at least in some way, that He does.

Considering that so many societies have individually come to religious belief requires explanation. Is it mere coincidence? Is religious belief a natural psychological defense mechanism against the difficulties that life unpredictably throws at us? Or is it that this common instinct to look beyond the physical world hints us towards some truth?

Philosophers, theologians and those who do not believe in religion devise primary discussion on rational arguments, logic, and reasoning. But human reasoning itself has limits. It is incapable of comprehending all knowledge or to understand all the realities of life. From a philosophical perspective, a notable argument is provided that the claim of the existence of God is more conceivable by the fact of well-known religious belief. Peter Kreeft explained it as a natural instinct or innate desire to search for the transcendent that hints at the existence of God. Besides that, how could the existence of God be proven? Some draw on history, others on science, personal experience, philosophy and on divine sources.

Some major arguments for the existence of God, stem from looking at the signs. The biggest sign is our universe. The cosmological argument emphasizes that the organization and precise cosmic planning points towards a purposeful design that is working on the right set of laws to permit the presence of life and allows it to flourish. If the universe did not contain a life-sensitive arrangement of stars, planets and other physical phenomena, there would be no life at all. The argument goes that it is impossible for the universe to have created itself in a flawless arrangement or to have been created by nothing; consequently, there must have been a Creator who triggered the universe with the initial force and energy. This force and energy is the work of God the Exalted, the Creator that set the universe in motion. This argument was used by Imam Abu-Hanifa to confound the atheists who questioned him. Ibn Abu Al-‘Izz reported that some speculative theologians who intended to discuss the God’s Lordship approached Abu-Hanifa. He said, “Before we discuss this question, tell me what you think about a boat in the Euphrates which goes to shore, loads itself with food and other things, then returns, anchors and unloads all by itself, without anyone sailing or directing it?” They said, “This is impossible.” Abu-Hanifa said: If it is impossible with a boat, then how is it possible for the world, in its entire enormity, to move by itself?

On the other hand, the teleological argument holds that the deep and harmonious relationship between each creation also points to the fact that this can only be the work of a Creator and lord of everything through which creation obtains life-promoting benefits. The Quran refers to celestial objects, the alteration of night and day, vegetation, means of transportation and much more. God created all these with a divine accuracy, like sun and moon they are moving in their defined orbits. Until 16th century AD, the geocentric theory remained unchallenged until Copernicus asserted that Earth is the one that moves around the sun. In 1609, German astronomer Johannes Kepler published the Astronomia Nova in which he concluded that not only do the planets move in orbits around the Sun but they also revolve on their axes. This perfection in design stresses the need for a Maker that controls and directs everything including the universe. God, the Almighty Creator calls our attention to contemplate on the innumerable signs in nature that demonstrate His power and design. Thus, from the sun and the moon in the heavens to the creatures on the earth, to the inmost parts of the human being, from the life to the death – all of these direct to the power and deliberate plan of the Creator. If He brought the physical universe into being then, of course, He uses physical processes. It is human nature (fitrah) to understand these signs as evidence of the Creator’s purpose, though understanding often leads to belief.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that everyone is born upon their natural instinct (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2658 b). So if signs of God are clearly indicating towards Creator and humans are born with this acceptance, then why many people disbelieve in God’s existence? The answer is that life is created as a test involving different temptations, desires and the pursuit of materialistic things. Once it is shaken by fear, danger or hardship, belief re-emerges. For instance, Pharaoh was an arrogant oppressor, who said, “I am your lord, most high,” but when he was about to drown, he said, “I believe in the One in whom the Children of Israel believe.”

Belief in the existence of God urges the need for moral values in the form of commands on what should be done and what should be avoided. These commands can only be given from the ultimate authority, which transcends the authority of creation. The disbelief not only blinds the intellect but also destroy one’s moral sense. When Wabisa ibn Ma’bad Al-Asadi asked it to the Prophet ﷺ about righteousness and sin, Prophet ﷺ said: “Consult your heart. Righteousness is that about which the soul feels tranquil and the heart feels tranquil, and sin is what creates restlessness in the soul and moves to and fro in the chest, even though people give you their opinion (in your favor) and continue to do so.” (Sharh Arba’een an Nawawi, Hadith: 27. It is classified as Hassan. Transmitted from the Sunan Ad-Darimi 2533 and by Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal).

The noteworthy point is the Almighty God emphasizes ‘Faith’ and ‘righteous good deeds’ together. If ‘moral standards’ were adequate, then belief in God is pointless in the first place as atheists can also very well claim that they ‘abide by moral values’.

With the above discussion, it is settled that the creation and subtle arrangement of the universe depicts the fact of a designer and a creator. It follows that any idea of the plurality of God, or more than one Ultimate power in the universe is conflicting to what we see as a harmony in nature. Assuming the different possibilities can prove this. There can be two possibilities for the presence of more than one God. Either they are equal in power or one is inferior to other.

If they all have the same power and authority then it raises the question of why is another god(s) are needed if they are agreeing on everything. Some may argue that these gods could compromise, but when one talks about conciliation, it follows that one god would have to give a little here and then the other god would do the same at another instance. This means that will of one of the gods and that of the others cannot be absolute. This is a contradiction because God is one who is supreme, has definitive and uncompromising authority.

For the second assumption, the notion of weakness with regards to deity is inappropriate which again logically contradicts with the definition of the supremacy of a God that is free from every weakness, error, and defect or from any associate and partner in His work. To direct the message of God and shun false deities, prophets and messengers are sent by Him to every nation. They invited people towards His worship alone and to obey Him in what He has ordained.

Conclusion

Thus, it infers that the knowledge of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, the Creator, is arrived through His messengers, revelation which is phenomenal and clear proof of perfect wisdom. Knowledge of God means that we affirm His oneness, uniqueness, perfection and sole authority. Likewise, He created signs in His creation so one must use his eyes, mind, and heart to enrich his understanding. It demands an act of faith but not, as it is commonly mistaken, a blind faith. True pursuers of knowledge test their ideas and faith persistently in the light of true sources with an open mind and heart.

Yoga an Exercise or Worship?

“Mama some ladies are on the door, they need to talk to you,” my son called me.

They were two middle-aged ladies. After greeting, they handed me a book and asked me do I pray. I said yes, we pray five times a day. They further asked me about names of God. I said yes there are 99 names of Allah. There is only one God Allah. I said in response to some of their comments. These were some Hindu Missionaries trying to persuade their belief of God as a Father. This non-Profit organization was inviting for Yoga, which is an exercise during which some names are practiced for self-contentment and relief from worldly worries. The conversation started when it was emphasized to convince God is like a father.

Me: God is only one and He is the Creator of all creatures. He is not son or father of anyone as some sets consider Isa (alahi salam) as a son of God.

Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was. (Surah Al-Imran: 59)

So do not assert similarities to Allah. Indeed, Allah knows and you do not know. (Surah An-Nahl: 74)

Missionary: Oh yes that’s not right considering someone son of God but God is like Father. Me: God is only one. He is the Creator of all creature, He is not son or father of anyone and for Allah is the highest attribute. And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise [1]

Missionary: Yes, this is true that He has no son but He is the Father of all creatures.

Me: Ok see this is my daughter (I pointed to my 6-year-old daughter standing beside me). I eat and she as well. I sleep and she needs to sleep too. She is like me. Kids are like their parents. God does not need anyone for support. He is independent. He does not eat or sleep as we do.

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. (Surah Al-Baqara-255)

Missionary: Yes but we do have minute characteristics like God.

Me: Yes that’s right. For example one of the names of God is Ar-Raheem. He is most Merciful. He placed mercy in our hearts too. He is all giving Al-Wahhab. We humans do have these attributes too.

There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

(Surah Al-Shu’ra: 11)

Missionary: Still he is like a father. I don’t have parents (One of them said). He is like the father for me. I rely on him for everything.

Me: That’s right, He takes care of us. He provides us but He doesn’t like to be named as the father. We are humans only His creatures. Let’s see this example if there is some celebrity, he has a sweeper, would he like to be related with his sweeper.

Allah presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allah ! But most of them do not know. (Surah An-Nahal: 76)

Missionary: (with some uncertainty)…we are only humans, we are like that but God is more than that. (A bit hesitation in saying) but we have some attributes of God. (The other lady said).

Me: If I make a car or Vase, I am the maker of that car. How can I be similar like my manufacture? God made Adam the father of all humans from dust. First, He made his structure then he blew his “spirit “ in that structure.

Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained. Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

(Surah As-Sajda: 7-9)

Missionary: So see He blew his spirit in humans…(smiling)

Me: Yes but that was to honor humans. Think about fish. It means Fish has a father too… Missionary: No answer, (but surprised expression)!!

Me: God loves his creature. He provides his creature but He does not like to be associated with His creation such as to be called as He has a son or to be called as a father. If people call Him father out of love, it’s against respect. This allowed people to add others to him. If you Google and see the translation of Chapter Al-Ikhlas of Quran. It explains how God is only one and has not born or nor given birth to anyone.

Missionary: Yes I will do. We are a non-profit organization. We also take in-kind donations for shelter homes. Would you like to give something?

Me: For now I have lots of Apples at home. Would you like to take apples…(I smiled) Missionary: Yes sure.

I gave them a bag of Apple.

Missionary: Oh they are a lot, are you sure (said with bliss and surprise)

Me: Yes of course (smile)

Missionary: Oh thanks a lot. I can’t resist myself giving you another book. What is your good name? (She said in very delight manner and handed me book).

Me: I took the book and said thanks. I also invited them to come in for tea. But they wanted to go to next door.

Our conversation ended up opening a broader understanding of Islam. Things become even more vibrant when paralleled with reverse. It seemed as a message was conveyed and will sure set in hearts because Truth has its own distinctive light. Once it lits up, it illuminates the surrounding at Once.

If some sets consider eccentric names as the name of God and exercise those names and invite others as well. We must aware, Allah SWT has beautiful names. He himself encourages us to call upon him with these names.

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

(Surah Nuh: 180)

There are now literally tens of forms of yoga, which range from the overtly religious/ spiritual to the entirely secular (only physical exercises, no intoning of Sanskrit chants and such). The most common form is physical, where the focus is on breathing patterns, flexibility, and general health.

In this case, Yoga is placed under the category of mu’aamalaat (general actions) rather than that of ‘ebaadah (worship). Thus, the principle of everything is permissible until proven otherwise kicks into play.

If someone invites to Yoga for spiritual enhancement, be cautious if they are saying some peculiar names during this exercise. They consider these strange names as names of God and consider them as a source of inner tranquility and harmony.
Quran is a marvelous book of Allah SWT. This Book is a source of guidance and light to lighten up our trails in this world. We must have this supplication in our routine to shield our faith from deceptions and illusions.

اللهم ارنا الحق حقاً وارزقنا اتباعه وارنا الباطل باطلا وارزقنا اجتنابه

Allahumma arinal haqqa haqqaw warzuqnat tiba’ah, wa arinal batila batilaw warzuqnaj tinabah

O Allah! show us the truth as true, and inspire us to follow it. Show us falsehood as falsehood, and inspire us to abstain from it.

CHAPTER 4: 1ST PRINCIPLE – TYPES OF WORSHIP (AD’DUA)

bismillah2 copy

Here the author, rahimahullaah,  begins to quote evidences for the types of worship which he mentioned in his saying: “And the types of worship which Allaah commanded, such as Islaam, eemaan  and ihsaan,  and from that is supplication (du’aa)…”  So he began by mentioning the evidences for supplication/invocation (du’aa),  and the proofs for Islaam, eemaan and ihsaan  in detail will follow, if Allah wills.

In the hadeeth there occurs:

الدُعَاءُ مُخُّ الْعِبَادَة

“Invocation/Du’aa  is the core of worship”[1]

Mukh (مخ) literally means brain in Arabic. Du’aa is the brain of worship.

Your brain is your core so when you use it in a context like this, it means not the literal brain of course, but the core of something. Here it means if there is no Du’aa in your Ibaadah, then the core of your Ibaadah is missing.

It must be noted that du’aa  is of two types:

(i) Supplication, when a request is made (du ‘aa-u mas’alah)  and, (ii) invocation through worship (du’aa-u Ibaadah).

Du ‘aa-u mas’alah:

So supplication is to request one’s needs, and is worship when the servant requests that from his Lord. This is because it involves showing one’s poverty before Allah, the Most High, and ones need to turn to Him, and ones certain faith that He is the one having full power, the Most Generous, the one who gives bounteously and is Most Merciful. Seeking ones needs from someone else from the creation is permissible if the one to whom the request is made is able to hear and understand it, and has the power to respond to it, like the saying: ‘O so and so give me food.’ But whoever asks a dead person or someone who is absent for that, then he is a mushrik,  since the deceased or the absent cannot possibly do that. So in such a case his supplicating to them shows that he believes that they have some control over the creation, and he is therefore a mushrik.

Du’aa-u Ibaadah:

As for invocation through worship, then it is that the person does an act of worship seeking reward and fearing punishment, and this is not correct unless directed to Allaah alone. To direct this to anyone else besides Allaah is major shirk  which takes a person out of the Religion and he falls under the threat in the Saying of Allah, the Most High,

وقال ربكم ادعوني استجب لكم ان الذين يستكبرون عن عبادتي سيدخلون جهنم داخرين

“Your Lord says: O people, invoke Me and supplicate to Me making your worship sincerely for Me alone, and I will answer you, and pardon you and have mercy upon you. Indeed those who disdain to worship Me alone will enter Hell-Fire in disgrace.”

[Soorah Ghaafir (40):60]

So the noble Aayah  proves that invocation/supplication (du’aa)  is worship, and if that were not the case it would not be said “those who disdain to worship Me alone….”  So whoever called upon anyone besides Allah, the Mighty & Majestic, requesting something which none but Allah has power over, then he is a mushrik (one who worships others besides Allah), an unbeliever (kaafir),  whether the one he calls upon is living or dead.

[1] Translator’s note: The hadeeth is reported with this wording by at-Tirmidhee and declared weak (da’eef)  by Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee in al-Mishkaat  (no. 2331) due to the weakness of one of its narrators, Ibn Lahee’ah. Imaam Ahmad and the four Sunan  report an authentic hadeeth  with the wording: “Invocation is Worship.”  (Declared authentic {saheeh)  by Shaykh al-Albaanee in Saheehul’Jaami’  (no. 3407)).

1ST CHAPTER OF BOOK:

CHAPTER 4: 1ST PRINCIPLE – TYPES OF WORSHIP (Proofs)

bismillah2 copy

Ibn Katheer, rahimahullaah, said: “The creator of these things is the One Who deserves to be worshipped.” All the types of worship which Allah commanded – like Islaam (submission and obedience to Allah), eemaan (true Belief comprising belief of the heart, speech of the tongue and action of the limbs), and ihsaan (perfection of worship), and from that is invocation/supplication (du’aa), reverential fear (khawf), hope and longing (rajaa), trust and reliance (tawakkul), fervent desire (raghbah), dread (rahbah), reverence and humility (khushoo’), awe (khashyah), turning repentantly (inaabah), appealing for aid and assistance (isti’aanah), seeking refuge (isti’aadhah), seeking deliverance and rescue (istighaathah), sacrificing (dhabfi), vows (nadhr) and the rest of the types of worship commanded by Allah, all of them are to be done exclusively for Allah, the Most High.

Having made clear that it is obligatory upon us to worship Allah, alone, giving no share of worship to anyone besides Allah, the author, rahimahullaah  goes on to explain some of the different types of worship. His saying And from it is ad’Dua ; he began with it because it is the greatest of the types of worship.

The proof for this is the Saying of Him, the Most High:

وان المساجد لله فلا تدعوا مع الله احدا

“And the places of Prayer are for Allah alone, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah”

اور یہ کہ مسجدیں (خاص) خدا کی ہیں تو خدا کے ساتھ کسی اور کی عبادت نہ کرو

[Soorah al-Jinn (72): 18]

Al-masaajid is the word that is used for the places where prostration is made and those places where prayer is performed. And the word Masaajid is also used for the seven parts of the body those are used for the prostration as it is mentioned in following hadith narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was ordered (by Allah) to prostrate on seven parts and not to tuck up the clothes or hair (while praying). Those parts are: the forehead (along with the tip of nose), both hands, both knees, and (toes of) both feet.

( Sahih al-Bukhari 809 – Kitab Ul Adhan ; To Prostate on Seven Bones)

Anyone who directs any part of that to anything besides Allaah, then he is a mushrik (associationist), an unbeliever (kaafir), and the proof is the Saying of Him, the Most High,

ومن يدع مع الله الها اخر لا برهان له به فانما حسابه عند ربه انه لا يفلح الكافرون

“And whoever worships along with Allaah any other object of worship has no proof for that; his reckoning will be with his Lord. Indeed the unbelievers will never prosper”

[Soorah al-Mu’minoon (23):117]

The first Aayah  is a proof, since Allaah, the Most High, informs that the masaajid, which are either the places in which prostration (sujood)  is made (i.e. the places of Prayer), or the limbs which prostrate, are for Allah alone. Then He stated as a consequence of that is: so do not worship and prostrate to anything else along with Him.

The second Aayah  is a proof since Allah, the one free of all imperfections and the Most High, explains that whoever supplicates and invokes something else besides Allah is an unbeliever (kaafir),  because He says: “Indeed the unbelievers will never prosper.”  Furthermore His Saying “(They have) no proof for that  indicates that it is not possible for there to be any proof supporting worship of other gods. So this is a description to make the matter clear and manifest, and it is not a qualifying description meant to exclude that which is supported by proof. This is the case since it is not possible for there to be any proof allowing worship of anything along with Allah.

(Islaam, eemaan  and ihsaan  are already explained in previous post. We will continue types of worship with respect to Dua and its categories and Proofs in next post insha’Allah.)

1ST CHAPTER OF BOOK:

CHAPTER 4: 1ST PRINCIPLE – TYPES OF WORSHIP

bismillah2 copy

Having made clear that it is obligatory upon us to worship Allah, alone, giving no share of worship to anyone besides Allah, the author, rahimahullaah  goes on to explain some of the different types of worship. So he said: “And all the types of worship… like Islaam, eemaan  and ihsaan.”

These three: Islaam, eemaan  and ihsaan  are the Religion (Deen) as occurs in the narration reported by Muslim from the hadeeth  of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab, radiyallaahu ‘anhu,  who said:

Whilst we were sitting with Allah’s Messenger one day, a man came having very white clothes and very black hair. No trace of having travelled could be seen upon him, and none of us knew him. So he sat down before the Prophet and joined his knees with his knees, and placed his palms upon his thighs and said: “O Muhammad, tell me about Islaam.” So Allah’s Messenger said: “Islaam is that you testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; that you establish the Prayer; pay the zakaat; fast Ramadaan; and make pilgrimage (hajj) to the House if you are able to do so.” He said: “You have spoken correctly.” He (i.e. ‘Umar) said: ‘So we were amazed at how he asked, and then told him that he had spoken correctly. ‘He said: “Then tell me about eemaan,” He ﷺ said:It is that you have true faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and that you have true faith in pre-decree (alqadr), its good and its evil.  He said: “You have spoken correctly.” He said: “Then tell me about ihsaan.” He ﷺ said:It is that you worship Allah as if you were seeing Him, and even though you do not see Him, yet He certainly sees you.He said: “Then tell me about the Hour.” He ﷺ said:The one who is questioned about it knows no better than the one who is asking. He said: “Then tell me about the signs.” He ﷺ said: “That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see the barefooted, naked, and destitute, shepherds competing in building tall buildings.”

Then he went off. Then he (i.e. the Prophet) remained for a long while, then he said:O ‘Umar, do you know who the questioner was? I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He ﷺ said:He was Jibreel, he came to you to teach you your Religion (Deen).””

Islaam:

It means submission and obedience to Allah. Islam with its five pillars, the two testifications of faith, the establishment of Salah, giving the Zakat, fasting Ramadan and making Hajj to sacred house of Allah – these are all acts of worship which are related to wealth (maaliyah)  and body (ba’daniyah).

 ارکانِ خمسہ کی تعمیل کا نام اِسلام ہے۔ جسمیں شہادتین، نماز، زکٰوة، روزہ، حج شامل ہیں۔

Eemaan:

It is the true Belief comprising belief of the heart, speech of the tongue and action of the limbs. It has six pillars includes, emaan Bil’ah (Tawheed), emaan in His angels, in His holy Books, in His Messengers, and in the Last day and emaan in Al-Qadr (the pre-decree), the good of it and bad of it, this is worship of Heart.

Al-Ihsaan:

It means the Perfection of worship, which is a single pillar. And it is that worship Allah that you are seeing Him, and even though you do not see him, then He certainly sees you. This is the highest type of the worship.

اِحسان سے مراد ایسے عبادت کرنا کہ جیسے تم اللہ کو دیکھ رہے ہو یا اِس بات کا یقین کہ وہ تمھیں دیکھ رہا ہے۔

So the Prophet ﷺ declared all of these things to be the Religion, and that is because they comprehend all of the Religion.

دین  = اِسلام  + ایمان اِحسان

1ST CHAPTER OF BOOK:

CHAPTER 4: 1ST PRINCIPLE – WHO IS YOUR LORD? (PART 1)

bismillah2 copy

A person’s first stage of reckoning will be in the grave where he will be asked three questions. Allah will help reinforce the person’s answers based on his deeds in this world. Let’s begin with the details of first question, taught in this book by Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab Rahimullah.

Sheikh Rahimullah’s saying “So if it said to you” meaning if you are asked about your Lord, this is a question which will occur, you will indeed ask in this life and Hereafter, so it is essential that you have knowledge of your Lord, the Majestic and you respond with the correct response and clear proof. So then say “My Lord is Allah” this is the answer, “the one who nurtured me and nurture the whole of the creation with His favour”. This is using an intellectual proof.

Ar-Rabthe Lord, the Majestic and Most High, is one who nurtures all of His servants with His favors and blessings. He creates them from nothing, in the wombs of their mother, in form of creation after another, within three depths of darkness. And He nourishes them with the provision in dark wombs. Then soul breath into the fetus so it moves and comes out to life, by the permission of Allah subhana’watalah. This process is nurturing in the womb and when it comes out, Allah the Perfect nurtures it with His favors like health and well-being, and He causes the milk of his mother to flow for it. So it nourishes until it can eat food and can survive without milk. Then, its intellect grows little by little, and its hearing and seeing improve, until it reaches puberty then it develops further until it reaches its full strength. He supports the creation the entire life with all their needs. Ar-Rabb also means that He blessed us with our physical bodies, our qualities, our desires, our thinking, our mind etc.

The entire universe is drowned in the blessings of Allah, from the top of their heads to the bottom of their feet. When we say the entire Aalam (universe), it is everything other than Allah.

The ‘Aalam of the Jinn, the ‘Aalam of the Ins (humans), the ‘Aalam of the devils, the ‘Aalam of the oceans, the ‘Aalam of the birds, the ‘Aalam of the animals and others that we may know about and some that we do not know about. Aalam uniquely was a word called that because they are a sign. It comes from the word sign, like a flag.

A sign of the creation Allah on this earth. Just like your laptops are a sign that someone manufactured them, we are a sign (we are like a flag) that we are the creation of Allah, and proof that Allah is our Lord who exists. No one else has ability except Him, over granting provision, neither the idols nor anything else, rather it is one who is provided for, , it is being created like yourself.

Allah is the Only Lord to Worship:

It is testimony of faith, to accept that there is none worthy of worship except Allah. Rahimullah’s saying “He is the one whom i worship“: the Lord, the One who deserves worship from me and from other than me. Then Sheikh also draws attention to the fact that it is not enough to affirm Ruboobiyyah (Allah’s Lordship), it is not sufficient that you say, “My Lord is Allah who nurtured me with His favors” but you need to acknowledge His rights to all worship, and you must make all worship purely and sincerely for Him. And this is the difference between the person of tawheed and person of shirk.

The person of shirk says” My Lord is Allah” but associates partners along with Him. He doesn’t solely worship Allah, but also include trees, rocks and beloved servants of Allah, righteous people and graves. So the affirmation of Lordship alone will not benefit him, and will not enter him in islam.

So his saying “And He is the One whom I worship” means the Diety whom I worship and his saying ” And there is no other whom I worship besides Him” neither from the Angels nor from the Messengers, or anyone else, I have nothing which i worship besides Him. He is the Perfect, the Most High. This is affirmation of Tawheed with the intellectual proof.

1ST CHAPTER OF BOOK:

First Principle ( Proof) – Part 2

THIRD CHAPTER – IBADAH WITH TAWHEED (Part 2)

bismillah2 copy

The Greatest Matter Commanded by Allah is Tawheed:

In this Sheikh Rahimullah explains that the greatest of all Allah has commanded is Tawheed, and it is a serious matter of all, because everything that is commanded by Him comes after wards. Allah orders that He be worshipped Alone without partners, because He Alone is the Creator and Sustainer Who sends His favors and bounties on His creation in all situations and instances. Therefore He deserves to be singled out, without associating anything or anyone from His creation with Him in worship.

The proof is His Saying, the Most High, in Surah An-Nisa ayah 36:

واعبدوا الله ولا تشركوا به شيئا

Worship Allah alone, making all worship purely for Him, and do not associate anything in worship along with Him.”

.اور خدا ہی کی عبادت کرو اور اس کے ساتھ کسی چیز کو شریک نہ بناؤ

Because worship will not be correct along with shirk and it will not benefit and will not be considered as worship, unless purely and sincerely done only for Allah, the Almighty.

The Most serious thing which Allah forbade is Shirk:

This is tremendous point of benefit because some people think there are other things which are considered as worst crime and forbidden by Allah like Riba, forcination, corruption of behaviour and manners. However, they do not give importance to the matter of shirk and do not warn against it.

تَعَالَوْاْ أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَلاَّ تُشْرِكُواْ بِهِ شَيْئاً

Say, “Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him

[Surah An’am : 151]

“I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from” meaning, I will inform you about what your Lord has forbidden for you in truth, not guessing or wishful thinking. Rather, it is revelation and an order from Him. There are many other proves in Quran regarding Shirk as a greatest sin and Allah will not forgive that person. Every sin is less than it and and what is obligatory is to begin with what is most important, then what is next in importance.

THIRD CHAPTER – IBADAH WITH TAWHEED (Part 1)

bismillah2 copy

The chapter 3 continues with the saying of Sheikh Rahimullah:

وبِذللکَ اٴمرَاللہُ جمیعَ الناسِ وَخلَقَھُم لَھا

“This is what Allah commanded all of the people with, and it was for this He created them”.

This is what Allah commanded refers to his saying, “that you worship Allah making the religion purely and sincerely for Him”. This is what Allah commanded all of creation with and it was for this He created them, and whole mankind, from the time of Adam until the last of mankind in the world. And worship Him alone without associating any partner, He the one free from all imperfections.

Allah Only created Mankind and Jinns to worship Him Alone:

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, made clear in His Book that mankind and jinns were only created for this. Allah, the Most high, says in Surah Ad-dhariyat ayah 56,

وما خلقت الجن والانس الا ليعبدون

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

“اور میں نے جنوں اور انسانوں کو اس لئے پیدا کیا ہے کہ میری عبادت کریں”

meaning, `I, Allah, only created them so that I order them to worship Me, not that I need them.’

`Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas commented on the Ayah,

﴿إِلاَّ لِيَعْبُدُونِ﴾

(…except that they should worship Me.) meaning, “So that they worship Me, willingly or unwillingly.’

Allah the Exalted, the Blessed created the creatures so that they worship Him Alone without partners. Those who obey Him will be rewarded with the best rewards, while those who disobey Him will receive the worst punishment from Him. Allah stated that He does not need creatures, but rather, they are in need of Him in all conditions. He is alone their Creator and Provider.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

Allah the Exalted said, “O Son of Adam! Busy yourself in worshipping Me, and I will fill your chest with riches and dissipate your meekness. Otherwise, I will fill your chest with distracting affairs and will not do away with your meekness.”

(At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah collected this Hadith and At-Tirmidhi said, Hasan Gharib.)

The Jinns are the species of beings from the realms of the hideen and unseen, we do not see them and they have duty to worship. They are also forbidden from commiting shirk and sin, just like the descendants of Adam. However, they are different from mankind in their created form.

Ibadah with Tawheed:

Saying of Rahimullah,

وَ معنی یعبدُونِ : یُوَحِّدونِ

and the meaning of worship (‘ibaadah) here is to single Allaah out with all worship (tawheed)

Meaning that tawheed is from the meaning of ‘ibaadah (i.e. true worship, which is to make worship of it purely for Allah). So, Tawheed can be explained to mean worship and worship can be explained to mean Tawheed. The meaning of  worship (ibaadah) has already preceded, and also what it applies to, and that it is more general than tawheed itself. You should know that Ibaadah is of two types:

1. The servitude of the creation (Ibaadah Kawniyyah), which is submission to what Allaah has commanded and decreed in the creation, and this is the submission that is common to all of the creation, none of them being able to escape it. Allah, the Most High, says in Surah Maryam ayah 93,

ان كل من في السماوات والارض الا اتي الرحمن عبدا

There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant.

-“تمام شخص جو آسمانوں اور زمین میں ہیں سب خدا کے روبرو بندے ہو کر آئیں گے”

2. This servitude covers the Believers and the unbelievers, the righteous and the wicked. Worship and servitude as prescribed by the Sharee’ah, and that is to obey and submit to the laws and commands of Allah, the Most High, and this is particular to those who are obedient to Allah, and who comply with that which the Messengers came with. Allah, the Most High, says in Surah Furqan ayah 63:

وعباد الرحمن الذين يمشون على الارض هونا واذا خاطبهم الجاهلون قالوا سلاما

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,

اور خدا کے بندے تو وہ ہیں جو زمین پر آہستگی سے چلتے ہیں اور جب جاہل لوگ ان سے (جاہلانہ) گفتگو کرتے ہیں تو سلام کہتے ہیں

The first type of servitude is not something for which a servant is commended, since it is not due to any action of his own; however he may be commended for giving thanks in times of ease, and for having patience in times of trial; as opposed to the second type of servitude for which a person is commended.

CHAPTER 2: SECOND MATTER – NEGATION OF SHIRK (PART 1)

Chp2-2(1)

This matter is connected with the first matter that is explained earlier about obligation of worshipping of Allah and following the path of Prophet ﷺ. So whoever worships Allah subhana watalah, and also associate anyone else along with Him, then his worship will be futile or null. Because worship can only benefit when it is done with ikhlas and tawheed. As Allah, the Most High said:

ولقد اوحي اليك والى الذين من قبلك لئن اشركت ليحبطن عملك ولتكونن من الخاسرين

And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah , your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.”

 (Surah Zumur: 65 )

If shirk is mixed with the worship, then it will corrupts the whole ibadah. Just like the salah (prayer) is not salah without purification. In many ayaat of Quran, Allah subhana watalah commanded to worship Him alone and not associate anyone along with Him.

 لا اله الا انا فاعبدون

There is no deity except Me, so worship Me – میرے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں تو میری ہی عبادت کرو

(Surah Al-Anbiya:25)

So whoever worship Allah and obey the messenger, then he may not associate anything in worship with Him, because this is the most evil thing, which displease Him. Those who perform salah, and witness the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ, but on other hand, if they supplicate at tombs and call for relief from the dead, then they should know that their worship is nullified and void. They have to abandon the worship of everything else besides Him. It is a serious matter to draw attention towards it, as the act of shirk displease Allah subhana watalah, which is destroying all the good deeds of one.

None should say: ” i take the beloved servants of Allah, the righteous people as intercessors. I do not worship idols and images, as they used to do in the time of ignorance”.  Remember that the Arab Pagans, despite their ignorance and arrogance, completely understood the meaning of Ibaadah (worship). They believed that intercession is a form of worship, and did not deny that calling upon pious people amounted to worshiping them. They would call their idols, ‘Aaliha (plural of Ilah meaning, One, who is worshiped). This is in sharp contrast of the belief of the grave-worshipers of today, who make the engraved as intercessors with Allah, and yet do not consider it to be Shirk!!
